We know Gijs to be an extremely dedicated, hard working student-athlete that has showed his determination by combining the highest level of soccer in the Netherlands, while passing his classes with flying colors. Something that is extremely difficult to combine in the Netherlands.Gijs is a typical Dutch versatile defender who is very comfortable on the ball. As a center back his passing ability allows him to dictate the build up play. When he plays as a left back he will get up and down the wing like no other. He will lead by example from the back, never giving up on a play and will fight for every ball. His heading ability is something that rally sticks out, defensively he will win a lot of headers but on the offense he is known to score with his head as well. He knows exactly when to build from the back with his passing, but also when to go deep and receive the ball in the attack and get crosses into the box for his teammates to get on the end of. He also doesn't shy away from a hard but fair tackle.
