About Sara Verschure

Athletic Background

Sara began her athletic journey in field hockey at age four and remained active in the sport for over 12 years. At 14, she added track to her schedule, initially training with an adult group at ACW ’66. Her talent in cross-country running became quickly apparent, leading to a move to Prins-Hendrik—a competitive club environment where she began to focus on shorter distances to improve speed and race tactics.

In just two years of running, Sara achieved notable success in both cross-country and track. Highlights include:

  • Winning her regional championship
  • Becoming Brabant champion
  • Finishing 3rd at the Dutch National Cross-Country Championships
  • Breaking her club’s 5km record multiple times
  • Achieving an 8th place finish at Nationals in cross-country

Sara’s indoor season culminated in a standout performance at the Dutch Indoor Championships in 2025. She placed 2nd in her heat with a PR of 2:18.95, then returned the next day to run 2:17.30 in the final—another PR and a 5th-place finish, showing her ability to rise to the occasion.

Her outdoor 2025 season marked a major breakthrough. From mid-April to late June, she showed steady progression in the 800m, repeatedly lowering her time and culminating in a new PB of 2:14.18.13 April – 2:21.45

  • 24 May – 2:17.47
  • 29 May – 2:16.96

  • 22 June – 2:18.71
  • 27 June – 2:16,81
  • 28 June – 2:14.18 (new PB)

This progression led to a 4th place finish at the Dutch Nationals, marking her as one of the top young 800m athletes in the country.

Strengths

Sara is known for her resilience, motivation, and steady focus. She thrives on structure and embraces tough training sessions with enthusiasm. Her ability to combine long-term discipline with short-term intensity has allowed her to progress quickly in a relatively short period. She’s also highly coachable and open to feedback—key traits for continued development.

Areas to Improve

Sara is currently working on breathing control, particularly in high-pressure race situations. While she prepares well mentally and physically, she knows improving this element will allow her to stay more relaxed and efficient in key moments, leading to faster times.

Goals

Sara’s short-term focus is to continue lowering her 800m time and earn podium finishes at national-level meets. Long-term, she aims to compete internationally, potentially as a student-athlete in the US or through Dutch national team pathways.

Though running is her top priority, she still enjoys field hockey recreationally with friends, balancing her competitive drive with a love for sport. As a proud member of Prins-Hendrik, she values team spirit and strives to grow both individually and with her teammates. With continued support and determination, Sara is ready to take the next steps in her athletic journey.
