Kyan Landveld knew early on that he wanted to get everything out of his sports career. With his background at Heroes Den Bosch, he belonged to the highest level of Dutch basketball. Kyan played for both the first and second men’s teams and had a special highlight in his last year before leaving for America: becoming National champion with the first team. That experience provided a strong foundation for his next big step.
Kyan is, in our opinion, a fine example of ambition and perseverance. His dream was clear: to play at the highest level while studying in America with the help of a sports scholarship. However, that route was not a easy. There was a challenge academically, but Kyan did not let that stop him.
Academic challenge as a starting point
After completing his MAVO, Kyan took several MBO courses, which he did not complete. Therefore, in order to start in America, he first had to get his GED. This eventually gave him a full diploma with which he could begin his American studies. Finding a university that was a good fit both athletically and academically was an important and challenging part of the process.
Playing basketball in the United States
Together with Slamstox, they looked at a wide range of possibilities. Athletically, the bar was high: there was interest from as many as 40 schools. In the end, Weatherford College turned out to be the best choice, where the overall picture was right. The transition to the American system took some getting used to at first, but by now Kyan feels completely at home. He has found the perfect balance between basketball and studying.

The Role of Slamstox
Slamstox’s guidance played a major role in the success of his process. Together with Kyan, they looked for academic opportunities and the right credentials to continue studying. In addition, Slamstox supported in making the right sporting choices, negotiating with coaches and universities and all administrative matters. The personal contact and fast switching, especially in the last phase, ensured that everything was arranged on time.
What we especially remembered was the fine and quick cooperation with Kyan and his mother. There was a short to the ball, so decisions could be made quickly. This ultimately led to a place where Kyan can further develop both athletically and academically.
An inspiring example
Kyan Landveld shows that even when the academic path is not standard, with perseverance, flexibility and the right guidance, much is possible. He has fulfilled his dream and is now in an environment where he can get the most out of himself.
