About Abel van Beek

Athletic Background
Abel has made significant strides in his throwing career, participating in several national championships, including the Outdoor Nationals javelin throw U18 in 2021, the Outdoor Nationals javelin throw U20 in 2022, and the Indoor Nationals shot put U20 in 2023. His most recent national performance was his best yet, where he placed 8th in the shot put with a throw of 12.82m (6kg), a career-best mark. Despite a less successful discus event, this competition stands out as his strongest outing.

In addition to his national championships, Abel also competes in the South Dutch Championships (Zuid-Nederlandse Kampioenschappen), where he placed third in the javelin throw in both 2021 and 2023.

Personal records
•  Discus throw (2kg): 33.50m
•  Shot put (7,26kg): 11.92m
•  Javelin throw (800gr): 42.99m

As a U20 athlete, his best marks were 37.20m in the discus, 12.82m in the shot put, and 42.99m in the javelin.

Strengths
Abel is known for his remarkable speed, which is a rare attribute for a thrower. Prior to an Achilles injury in 2024, he ran the 100m in 11.91s, a feat that has played a significant role in shaping his throwing technique. This speed has also helped him compensate for his relatively short stature, standing at 178cm (around 5’9″-5’10”). Additionally, Abel has impressive strength for his size, able to bench press 110kg, squat 150kg, and clean nearly 100kg (though his Olympic lifting technique still needs work).

Goals

Abel has set ambitious goals for his throwing career, aiming to significantly improve his PBs. He has always dreamed of reaching 50m in the discus and 15m in the shot put. Abel acknowledges that gaining weight could enhance his throwing ability. He believes that by increasing his body mass, he can further improve his performance in the discus and shot put. Furthermore, while he has made excellent progress since his Achilles injury, he continues to focus on refining his throwing technique.
Abel is committed to putting in the hard work necessary to come as close as possible to these marks. With his recovery from the Achilles injury, he expects to make substantial progress in this outdoor season. Abel is ready to continue his journey, fueled by dedication, strength, and a drive to reach new heights in his throwing career.
