About Iker Kuijs

Athletic Background

Iker has built an impressive résumé at the national level, earning five medals at the Dutch Championships across the U16 and U18 categories. He has ranked three times in the Dutch all-time top 10 lists for U16 and U18 and set the Dutch national record in the U18 indoor 400 meters in 2025. While his 48.97s mark was the fastest in Dutch history for that category in early 2025, it was surpassed.

His personal bests include 48.97 in the 400 meters and 58.54 in the 400-meter hurdles. The hurdles time was achieved despite a fall on the final hurdle, after which he unfortunately sustained an injury, highlighting the untapped potential still present in this event.

Since May 2023, Iker has been part of the RTC (Regional Training Center), training within the elite sprint and hurdles group. This high-performance environment has further supported his technical, physical, and competitive development.

Strengths

One of Iker’s greatest strengths is his mental approach to competition. He remains calm and focused at major meets, stays in his own rhythm, and is rarely affected by external pressure. Physically, he combines strong top-end speed with exceptional endurance. In the 400 meters, he fatigues later than most competitors, allowing him to maintain high velocity deeper into the race due to delayed lactate buildup.

Areas for Improvement

Iker is currently working on improving his strength and balance, which he identifies as his main developmental areas. Together with his coach, he follows a targeted training program with specific exercises to address these aspects and support long-term progression.

Athletic Goals

Iker’s primary goals are continuous self-improvement, competing at international meets, and setting new Dutch records. Long-term, he aspires to compete at World Championships level and continue pushing his performance limits well beyond his junior career.

Academics and Extracurricular Activities

Alongside athletics, Iker is a highly motivated student with a 3.75 GPA and a strong interest in engineering and innovation. For five years, he has participated in his school’s specialized Research & Design program, where students develop technical solutions for real-world challenges in collaboration with companies and universities.

One of his most notable projects was designing and building a solar-powered boat, which achieved the best result in school history since 2019 during a 200-kilometer national competition. More recently, he worked on an innovative pacemaker concept in collaboration with Eindhoven University of Technology, focusing on future medical technology using proteins and sound-wave activation instead of traditional batteries.

Iker hopes to study (bio)medical engineering in the future, with a focus on improving prosthetics and exoskeletons to help people regain mobility and independence.

Outside the classroom, Iker is actively involved in extracurricular and volunteer activities at school. He has contributed to organizing annual gala and graduation events and assists each year with the school’s track and field day for new students, helping with event preparation, warm-ups, and coaching younger athletes.
