About Indy Matze

Indy began her athletic career in 2012 with Swimkick before transitioning to water polo in 2016 at Z&PC De Gouwe. Alongside water polo, she also competed in competitive swimming until 2023, building a strong swimming foundation that continues to benefit her game today.

During the 2022–2023 season, Indy trained with GZC Donk, one of the strongest water polo clubs in the Netherlands, before officially joining the club the following year. She also completed two seasons of additional RTC (Regional Talent Center) training in Gouda, further accelerating her development.

Throughout her youth career, Indy has achieved multiple team successes. She became champion with DG1 during the 2018–2019 season and won additional championships with BM1 in both the 2021–2022 and 2022–2023 seasons. In 2024–2025, she captured another championship title with GZC Donk Dames 3.

At the national level, Indy helped her teams achieve silver medals at the Dutch National Championships (NK) in both the 2023–2024 and 2024–2025 seasons. Her talent has also been recognized through invitations to the Dutch Youth National Team (Jong Oranje) selection camps in 2023, 2024, and 2025 for the U17 and U18 age groups.

Internationally, Indy was selected in both December 2023 and December 2024 to participate in a tournament and training camp in Lloret de Mar, Spain, gaining valuable international experience against strong competition.

Strengths

One of Indy’s greatest strengths is her speed in the water. Her swimming background allows her to consistently win the sprint and transition quickly into offensive situations, making her an immediate threat in counterattacks. Her speed also enables her to recover quickly on defense when possession changes. She has a 100m freestyle PB of 1:03.81.

Indy is a strong team player who values communication and collaboration in the pool. While she is capable of playing multiple positions, she is most comfortable at positions 4 and 5, where she has developed significant experience through both training and competition.

A particular strength of her game is her ability to swim into position from the perimeter toward the center forward area, creating offensive opportunities and putting pressure on opposing defenses. In addition, her physical strength allows her to compete effectively in one-on-one situations and maintain position against defenders.

Areas for Improvement

Indy is focused on becoming more effective as a true center forward. While she is comfortable moving into the position during play, she is working on developing the skills required to start and maintain position at center forward against strong defenders.

She is also looking to improve her performance during 5-meter penalty shots, an area where she currently has limited game experience and wants to gain more confidence.

Another area of focus is increasing her vertical power in the water. By improving her ability to elevate higher above the surface, she aims to generate more powerful shots and become an even greater offensive threat. Strength and conditioning training continue to play an important role in this development.

Athletic Goals

During her time in the United States, Indy’s primary goal is to develop as much as possible as both a player and a teammate. She is excited about the opportunity to learn from experienced coaches, compete against high-level opponents, and experience a different style of training and tactical approach.

She hopes to join a competitive team environment where athletes support each other, work toward shared goals, and strive for success together. For Indy, team culture and strong relationships are important components of both personal and athletic growth.

Following her collegiate career, she plans to apply everything she has learned in the United States to continue competing and developing at the highest level possible, returning as a stronger, more complete water polo player.
