About Sophie Wegman

Athletic Background

Sophie began her athletic journey at the age of 4, taking ballet classes for several years before transitioning into gymnastics at age 7. Her early ballet experience laid the foundation for her expressive movement, precise lines, and strong presentation skills on the floor and beam.

She started training at SiU, the gymnastics club in her hometown, before joining Turnz Gymnastics Amsterdam. After two years, she moved to her current club, United Amstelveen, where she continues to grow into a strong and well-rounded gymnast.

In 2022, Sophie achieved one of her biggest milestones to date, winning the silver medal on bars at the Dutch National Finals. Unfortunately, in November 2024, she sustained an elbow fracture, which required several months of recovery. Despite this setback, she has shown great determination and resilience, training hard to return stronger than before.

With the new season starting in November, Sophie is fully focused on regaining her competitive rhythm and continuing to build towards new personal bests.

In addition to her own training, Sophie assists in coaching and supporting the younger gymnasts at her club, helping them with technique and motivation during their sessions. This experience has not only strengthened her leadership skills but also deepened her understanding of gymnastics from a coaching perspective.

Strengths

Sophie is known for her artistry, coordination, and determination. A quick learner, she enjoys mastering new skills and refining technical details. Her coaches often describe her as a natural performer, thanks to her dance background and her ability to express different styles during routines.

She brings a positive attitude and strong work ethic to every training session and enjoys supporting and motivating her teammates. She also takes pride in her conditioning and strength training, knowing that a strong physical base is key to achieving her goals in gymnastics.

Areas to Improve

Sophie is currently working on improving her running technique and power, particularly in her vault approaches. Together with her coaches, she focuses on enhancing her explosiveness and sprint mechanics to create more power on takeoff.

Athletic & Academic Goals

In the U.S., Sophie aims to reach her full potential as a gymnast, contributing to her college team with consistent performances, artistry, and a strong work ethic. She hopes to grow not only as an athlete but also as a person, learning from new experiences and challenges along the way.

Academically, Sophie looks forward to exploring her future study path, gaining knowledge in a field she’s passionate about, and performing well in school. While she has not yet decided on a specific major, she is eager to continue learning and developing herself in every possible way.

Despite her young age, Sophie already displays the mindset and maturity of a high-level athlete. She is excited to take on new challenges and make the most of every opportunity. Above all, she hopes to enjoy her journey, improve every day, and make lasting memories both in and out of the gym.
