One of the hotspots in Florida is, of course the city of Miami. When you think of Miami you probably think of the beach directly. Here you can definitely spend a weekend or even your spring break (if you aren’t in season of course). Mardi Gras – New Orleans

Mardi Gras is perhaps one of the most famous festivities in Louisiana. In New Orleans, they celebrate a kind of carnival that is now known worldwide and attracts many tourists every year. It is celebrated every year before Ash Wednesday and 47 days before Easter. In 2023, it will kick off on Tuesday, Feb. 21, and it promises to be huge spectacle. It is a celebration for everyone and you can dress however you want as long as you are wearing something green, purple or gold during the parade. There is a lot of eating and partying during Mardi Gras and in terms of food, this is the best place to be. If you want to be there it is wise to book your accommodation and flight early because it is ussually fullt booked!

French Quarter – New Orleans

As the name suggests, this is the French section of the city of New Orleans and is also one of the busiest parts of the city. This historic part still dates back to the time of the French colonial occupation and this can be clearly seen in the architecture, for example. Furthermore, it has since become the place with the best restaurants, bars and stores in the city. The French Quarter is also home to some really cool hotels designed in the old style as shown in the image below. Be sure not to miss anything from The French Quarter while in New Orleans.

National WWII Museum – New Orleans

New Orleans is also, in our opinion, a must visit museum for anyone who wants to learn (more) about America’s history in the second world war. But the National WWII museum is also more than suitable for just the experience. At the museum, you can experience the entire timeline of the war in an interactive way, from the battles in Europe to the beaches of Okinawa and the battle for Midway. You can also try out all kinds of military equipment and take a ride in one of the old vehicles.

Jazz fest – New Orleans

Jazz in Louisiana super popular, for example, in New Orleans you can find a huge number of bars where this genre is played live. In fact, you can find all kinds of Jazz festivals throughout the state. But the place in Louisiana where Jazz is most popular is at almost every bar is in New Orleans. Here is also a huge festival which is usually held in late April or early May. So definitely something to remember if you love Jazz and you have finished all your exams early. If you’re not a fan, it’s also smart to remember these dates, because it can be a tremendously crowded time in New Orleans!

Steamboat tour – New Orleans

As you have probably read by now, there is a tremendous amound of activities in New Orleans. In fact, the next outing is a ”Steamboat tour” on an original ship from the 1800s. The unique thing is that these ships are powered by a large rat at the rear. Another fun fact is that live jazz music is always played during the tour. This steamboat travels mostly along the Mississippi River and occasionally docks at swamps where you can spot wild alligators. You can only find this outing in New Orleans, so it is definitely worth it!

Crawfish Capital of the World

Did you know that 90 percent of all lobsters and crabs come from Louisiana? No wonder you can eat fantastic crab and lobster in almost every restaurant here and other advantage it is not even that hugely expensive in this state. Here it is often steamed together with potato, corn and sometimes certain pieces of meat in the form of a soup and is called Gumball. You end up with a huge plate full of delicious food in front of you, check out the picture below. 

Alligators

Louisiana is sometimes called the Home of the Alligator because of the huge number of alligators that live there in the wild. Louisiana has many swamps where they can live in perfect conditions. Especially in the south you can regularly spot an alligator in the wild even though they are actually quite shy. There are also special tours through the swamps where they explain everything about the swamps and everything is done to spot alligators. An adventure we think you should definitely not miss either!

Louisiana State University – Baton Rouge

One of the most famous universities in this state also bears its name, Louisiana State University. Apart from being an academically excellent school, they also have fantastic facilities for their student-athletes. They are best known for their American football team the LSU Fighting Tigers. Especially the game against their biggest rival Alabama is definitely one to put on your list when visiting Louisiana. Did you know that LSU Football has the 6th largest stadium in America? Louisiana’s Creole Heritage Site

Louisiana, like many other southern states in the US, has a big slavery past. At this estate, you can get a glimpse into this old world with the original plantations and associated homes. You will be taken into the story of a family that has lived there for four generations and get a unique insight into their understanding of the plantation’s past. Especially an activity if you are interested in American history, especially if you are in New Orleans, it is only an hour’s drive before you get to the swamp.

Poverty Point World Heritage Site

In northern part of Louisiana you can visit an archeological area, which was created by one of the first inhabitants of this area. There is a huge piece of pottery which can be linked to a settlement from prehistoric times, it is also on the world heritage list and a museum has been built next to it where explanations are given about the area. Definitely worth a visit.

Hocking Hills State Park

In Southern Ohio, there is a fantastic park to enjoy some cool adventures. This park is known for its beautiful waterfall and challenging hiking trails. One of the advantages of Hocking Hills is that this park can be visited year-round, which means it always carries new charms. You can visit this park in a variety of ways, including putting it on your road trip list, staying overnight in one of the lodges complete in the woods or camping by yourself (we do recommend doing so when the temperatures are a bit warmer). Are you up for an adventure? Get ready for Hocking Hills!

Cleveland – Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Americans are a huge fan of Hall of Fame’s, so Cleveland is the home rock & roll! If you are in Cleveland, this is an experience you really can’t miss. In this huge Hall of Fame you can experience rock & roll in many different ways. For example, there are multiple studios where you can experience music and make music yourself, with even a small stadium to get totally into the rock! When you are in Cleveland you have to visit this experience, you will definitely spend some hours here!

Cleveland – West Side Market

This magnificent hall in Cleveland opened back in 1912, and is filled with all kinds of small markets. Definitely a must visit if you are in the mood for some goodies! There are all sorts of things to find, including a variety of local meals that you can grab for lunch or just to snack! Furthermore, the building itself is a sight to put on your list. In short, don’t forget to stop by West Side Market when in Cleveland.

Cleveland – Guardians Ballpark

If you are in Cleveland, it is super cool to attend a baseball game of the Guardians (former Indians). At Progressive Field Stadium, beside the great atmosphere, you also have a stunning view on the city during the game. The Guardians, of course, play in the MLB, the highest level in America, in their early years they won the World Series twice. Cleveland’s baseball team is best known for their controversial logo, of the red Indian, and (former) name, both of which were changed at the beginning of this season. We recommend you to take at least a look at this cool stadium. But are you more into basketball? Then stop by the Cleveland Browns where Lebron James played a few years ago. 

Columbus – Franklin Park and Botanical Gardens

We believe it is important for our student-athletes to take their rest after competitions and be able to take some rests between training sessions. A beautiful place to do this in Columbus is the Botanical Gardens, a wonderful place to walk around and relax. The rest of Franklin Park is also worth a visit, with both indoor and outdoor gardens where you can also enjoy great food and attend workshops or visit one of the monthly events. This is the number one spot to visit in Columbus! So don’t forget to put it on your list!

Columbus – Ohio State University

Ohio State university has one of the best football teams of America and has wonderful facilities for all of their student-athletes! When are you in Columbus be sure to visit this university, its sports facilities and of course watch a game of the Ohio State Buckeyes! This top football team has 8 NCAA titles on their name and are shouted to victory at home games by over 100,000 fans! A must visit when you are in Ohio.

Cincinnati – Zoo & Botanical Gardens

Cincinnati is the home to what many people say is the best zoo in America! Moreover, it is also the second oldest zoo in America, founded in 1873. They are known for the number of endangered animals for which they have special conservation programs, such as for gorillas and white tigers. Furthermore, they also specialize in unique gardens with fields full of plants and flowers where nature can take its course.

Cincinnati – Great American Ball Park

For all baseball fans and other sports enthusiasts, Cincinnati has something special: America’s oldest baseball club is located here! The Cincinnati Reds have had a new stadium for several years now, and it is breathtaking to say at least! A hyper-modern stadium with still that old baseball feeling. They managed to bring back several elements of the old stadium. Check it out in the video below!

Put-in-Bay

This special little island in Lake Erie is a wonderful summer destination to relax. On this island stands the Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial honoring the battle of Lake Erie. Therefore, you can see all kinds of different things about the American Civil War, on this island. There are also a number of vacation parks to relax, and you can moor in a beautiful harbor. You can book a sailing trip there to discover the lake. Just make sure not to go in the winter because then the island is not accessible!

Amish Country – Ohio

Have you added Amish Country to your road trip yet? In the South of Cleveland you will find something that can only be found in America. Perhaps you’ve heard of them, the Amish are a reclusive and close-knit community who still live by the traditions of the late eighteenth century. They go around by horse and cart and have no television, computer, or cell phone. Some communities are eager to tell you more about their way of life and take you through some of their special activities and culture. Ready for an adventure?

So, Ohio has plenty to do and many different experience! There are some great sports teams and wonderful universities. There are also many more parks to relax and in the big cities there is enough to do for everyone.

Today we are going to take a look at the state of North Carolina in our series “What to do when in… In this series, we’ll show you the highlights and the funniest, most special sights of the US states. This time it’s North Carolina’s turn, the state where no less than four of our employees have studied! So, Pedro played tennis at the Seahwaks in Wilmington, Famke ran at High Point, Eva played hockey at UNC Chapel Hill and Alec studied at ECU in Greenville. The state of North Carolina also especially known for its beautiful and mountainous parks, beaches and nature.

The Outer Banks

One of America’s most famous beaches is located in North Carolina. This special area had been known to many Americans for quite a long time, but after the hit series from Netflix, this is definitely one of the places you must have seen in North Carolina! As a student-athlete, you sometimes have a weekend off and there is no better place to visit during a weekend to completely unwind. Apart from the beach and delicious food, you should definitely visit Wright Brothers Airport. In fact, this is where the first plane ever took off, created by the Wright Brothers. If you want to relax and have a great experience, this is definitely a must visit.

Charlotte – NASCAR Hall of Fame

In North Carolina’s largest city, Charlotte, a bit racing fan probably can’t contain his or her enthusiasm. The NASCAR (American motorsports organization) Hall of Fame is also a must visit if you are not necessarily a racing fan. But also just if you are looking for an active experience in the American way. The Hall of Fame is not just a museum with the history of this racing discipline. There is plenty to experience, so you can provide your own race commentary ”Olav Mol Style” or perform a full pit stop yourself. And extra fun, you can also test your own racing talent in a racing simulator. In Charlotte, you can also stop by 7th street Public Market, Freedom Park and Carowinds Amusement Park. Three places where you can have hours of fun as a tourist.

Charlotte – Carolina Panthers & Charlotte Hornets

As a student-athlete yourself, you will be quite busy with your own sport and studies. Many universities have great facilities and stadiums, where you can cheer on all the other teams from your university. Would you like to get a closer look at what sports are like in America outside of college? Then your best bet in North Carolina is to check out the Carolina Panthers (NFL) or the Charlotte Hornets (NBA). A little tip for when you go to the Panthers, check out when they play against the Bucaneers. Then you can still see Tom Brady in action! Also pay close attention if you go to the Hornets, you might spot their world-famous owner. We’ll give a little hint: He’s a former basketball player himself and is known for his shoes. Do you already know who it is?

BBQ – Buxton Hall Barbecue

In North Carolina, they shout different things about their cuisine. For example, they claim to have the best fried chicken and to be the best at BBQ. Now it’s up to you to go test especially the latter! According to many, the best place to do this is at Buxton Hall in Ashevill. Taste what American BBQ really means for the first time and don’t forget to taste a piece of Brisket there. There is something else special about Carolina BBQ and that is the wholo-hog tradition! As one of the best, they prepare a whole pig on the BBQ here. The cooking on the BBQ here can take from 6 to 12 hours! That’s a bit different from our Dutch hamburgers that are ready in 10 minutes.

Appalachian Mountains

This mountain range is located east of the Rockey Mountains and is considered an extension of them. The area is also known among Americans as The Longest trail because it runs in an almost straight line for a length of about 3,400 kilometers. Furthermore, this is the perfect place to experience forest hiking or other sporting activities at a reasonable altitude. Note you can’t enter the park by motorcycle, so you’ll either have to walk or take a nice bike ride. Are you totally up for an adventure? Then you can also spend a night here.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

The name actually says it all, this huge mountain range is known for its low hanging fog. Despite the fog, this National Park is easily accessible year-round and is also one of the most visited National Parks in all of America. And for a reason: the weather is pleasant year-round with a small chance of some snow in winter, though. Like the Appalachian Mountains, this park also consists largely of forests. A visit to this park can be perfectly combined with a visit to the BBQ in Asheville (time for a real American road trip). During that road trip, do not forget Blue Ridge Parkway! This is considered the favourite drive in America and is one of the recommendations of our Slamstox intern Alec.

Chimney Rock State Park

Back to that Roadtrip, Chimney Rock is also near the Great Smokey Mountains and is also definitely a place where you can spend a good weekend. The name of this park actually says what to expect; at the top of a beautiful rock, you get a view that is not to be missed. Be careful though; it’s quite a hike to get to the top, more than 500 steps alone. But this shouldn’t be a problem for a student-athlete, so bring your hiking boots and enjoy the beautiful view after a good workout.

Wrightville Beach – Wilmington

East of the city of Wilmington lies one of Slamstox founder Pedro’s favorite beaches! So during his college days, he could be found here regularly. Relax and enjoy the endless sea views. By the way, have you always wanted to go sailing or surfing? This is the place to take the first step at WB Surf Camp. Are you in a less sporty mood? No problem either, as you can enjoy the delicious food at Matts Channel Seafood, take a leisurely stroll on the pier or just enjoy a real beach day.

Carolina Beach – Wilmington

Another recommended place for a day at the beach is Carolina Beach, which is a little further and south of Wilmington. This beach is a lot more famous than Wrightville, in the rest of North Carolina. Because of this, there is also a bit more to do such as various concerts and other events. For example, there is a fantastic vintage seaside boardwalk where you can find all kinds of local eateries and other activities. The Carolina Beach Music Festival is a hugely famous festival on a beach and also one of the few in all of America. Definitely worth seeing if you can combine a visit to this beach with a visit to the festival.

Apple Headquarters

Apple is planning to put up a new campus in Raleigh North Carolina! Below you can see the first drawings, construction will start in 2023 and will take a few years. Now you may be thinking why is this interesting? At Apple there are always huge opportunities for summer internships and therefore it is definitely something to keep in mind, for when you have more time during off season for example. But in addition, Apple is always working on the latest developments, so believe us, this campus will be full of new tech gadgets. So definitely worth a visit for a casual visit as well.

So there is plenty to experience and do in North Carolina, no wonder four of our colleagues were active here. From special parks and cool sports events to lovely beaches where you can relax. Time for a new ‘What to do when in…’ In this series, we show you the highlights, funniest and most special sights of the American states, with today: Illinois. The well-known route to the west starts in this Northern state and is a metropolis that you really have to visit! As a student-athlete, you are very busy with your sports and study, but there is also plenty of time to relax. We listed the most beautiful and nicest sights for you, but first things first: we want to highlight and show you where the state of Illinois is on our own Slamstox America map.

Chicago

We start with the pearl of the North of America, the third largest city in America with more than nine million inhabitants. In this city, you can eat a delicious Chicago-style hot dog, see if you can eat the famous deepdish pizza and much more. Furthermore, Chicago has a beautiful skyline and you don’t have to be bored in the evening because of the many clubs and entertainment venues. You can make a long list about this city alone but we have listed the highlights for you. You simply must visit this city if you are in Illinois!

Millennium park – Cloud gate

This park is one of the most famous parks in Illinois and is located on Lake Michigan, which you can enjoy in the summer. But in winter, the lake also brings a lot of cold. There are several attractions in the park, including a large fountain, a beautiful pedestrian bridge, the open-air theater, but the attraction that really stands out is the Cloud Gate! This ”cloud” gives a complete reflection of everything around you, a very special sight when you stand in front of it. It is therefore no surprise that this attracts millions of tourists every year. On a nice day you can take beautiful pictures where you see your own reflection with all the buildings around you. Also nice is that the residents of Chicago give free tours from the information building every day.

Botanic Garden

Chicago is a very busy city, there is always something going on. When you want to relax in such a busy metropolis, the botanical gardens are the place to be, especially if you love nature. This garden is open all year round and is free to visit. You can find more than 20 themes with nature in mind here, spread over nine islands. Enough nature to enjoy hours, extra special: the park specializes in keeping protected and almost extinct plant species. Therefore, there is a good chance that you will encounter plants here that you will not easily encounter elsewhere.

360 Chicago

There is only one real way to take in the Chicago skyline and that is to visit one of the tallest buildings yourself: 360 Chicago gives a complete view of the entire skyline! Apart from this unique experience, they have also incorporated a special tilt system in the tower: you can stand in a kind of container against the glass windows, after which you tilt forward and have a special view of Chicago. A unique experience and in our opinion one that you should not miss when you are in this city.

Lincoln Park Zoo

Opened in 1868, the zoo is one of the largest in North America, home to over 1,000 animals (of which 200 are different species). You can see that this zoo is old because of the beautiful, historic buildings, but they do move with the times. This means that in the evening, for example, everything is illuminated in different LED colors. There are several areas in the zoo, including a beautiful Arctic where the polar bears can roam freely. As a visitor, you can take a look under water here to see the polar bears swim. In 2016, the Robert and Mayari Pritzker Penguin Cove opened where African penguins roam free. The environment is designed in such a way that the animals can live and reproduce without stress.

Buffalo Rock State Park

South of Chicago is Buffalo Rock State Park which is definitely recommended if you like nature! The park is known for its beautiful river on which it is located. The park is protected by surrounding stones carved over the centuries by river erosion. Buffalo Rock State is located in a quiet area, compared to other parks in America, the park is also relatively small. But as far as we are concerned, this is a fantastic place to relax (in an active way)!

Route 66

The most famous road trip route starts in Chicago and runs through numerous states all the way to Los Angeles. This is one of the first roads in America that was built specifically for driving from east to west. Over the years, the road had to make way for the huge highways, so this route is now nothing more than a country road. Fortunately, most Americans recognize the historical value of this route and it has been completely mapped out with beautiful historic buildings on its route for a few years now.

Begin of the route E. Jackson Blvd, Chicago

As we just said, the well-known Route 66 starts in Chicago. But where exactly does it start? That is not so easy to determine as the route was changed several times in the early years due to the growth of Chicago. The road was originally opened on Jackson Boulevard in 1926, after which the starting point has been changed three more times. The famous sign can be found on the aforementioned boulevard, where the road was originally opened. It is also highly recommended to visit all kinds of historic buildings in this area, a great start for your road trip.

Dell Rhea’s Chicken Basket

There are a lot of iconic and special restaurants along Route 66, all of which are certainly worth a visit, but in our opinion you should not miss this one: Dell Rhea’s Chicken Basket. This fast food restaurant has been along the route since 1946! Dell Rhea’s is in the top 10 best drive-Inn restaurants in America, so that’s quite an accomplishment. In addition, this restaurant also has a fantastic, old-fashioned decorated dining area. A fast food restaurant is of course never really healthy, but this one is so special that it is definitely worth a visit.

Bloomington to Sprinfield

The section of the route between Bloomington and Springfield has several iconic landmarks. For example, you will find the Paul Bunyon Hot Dog Statue in Atlanta, Illinois. Literally a giant statue of a man holding a hot dog. If you drive a bit further to Pontiac you can take a picture with one of the most famous murals of the route in the US. When you arrive in Springfield, you can’t skip eating at Cozy Dog corn dogs! This iconic restaurant specializes in making hot dogs coated with crispy corn dough, or a corn dog. As far as we’re concerned, a real recommendation!

There are plenty of fun things to do and see in Illinois. From visiting Chicago, to the beginning of the famous Route 66. There is plenty for everyone to see in this state. Do you want to become a student-athlete or want more information about college sports in America? Reach out!

Today, we’re going to be traveling to the northwestern most state where the greenery of nature appears to be teeming around every corner: Washington. As a student-athlete, you of course spend a lot of time on sports and studying. But there is also plenty of time to explore the country, so make sure you don’t miss out on the numerous sightseeing opportunities.

There may be instances during your time in the US when you become overwhelmed with your studies or training. But don’t worry! Washington is filled with a variety of tranquil places where you can place your mind at ease and relax as you become one with your surroundings. Don’t forget to keep on reading if you’d like to start planning your own Washington itinerary.

Olympic National Park

Considered one of the most diverse national parks in the US, Olympic National Park covers almost 1 million acres across the Olympic Peninsula located in Washington State. The park serves as a great way to reconnect with nature, given that it encompasses sights such as glaciated mountain peaks, lush river valleys, and tranquil lakeshores. You may even spot some wildlife, including sea otters, black bears, or elk! If you’re ever feeling overwhelmed with your studies, make sure to venture here and immerse yourself in its serene atmosphere.

Mount Rainier National Park

If you’re in the mood for a challenging climb, a camping adventure, or an escape from the city, then drive over to Mount Rainier National Park. The park is one of the most visited and oldest national parks in the US, given that it was established in 1899 and has 1.3 million visitors per year. Having erupted approximately 150 years ago, Mount Rainier is still an active volcano and claims the title of the highest mountain in the state at a height of 4,392 meters. Due to its various trails, the park is a perfect spot for hiking, mountain climbing, and backpacking.

The Space Needle

Noted for its futuristic design, the Space Needle is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world, and it can be found in Seattle. This iconic structure was built for the 1962 World’s Fair, and it was meant to symbolize humanity’s Space Age aspirations. The Space Needle is 605 feet tall with a saucer at its top, which is Seattle’s only spot offering 360-degree indoor and outdoor panoramic views of the city and its various surroundings. All-glass floors and floor-to-ceiling glass can be found on the lower and upper levels, respectively, which makes for great photo opportunities!

Pike Place Market

If you like food, then make sure you’re paying attention. Pike Place Market is the oldest continuously operating farmers market in all of the US, attracting approximately 10 million people per year. The market’s history stems back to August 1907, when eight local farmers began selling produce directly to the public rather than through a middleman. Today, the market consists of more than 500 shops, vendors, restaurants, and bars. Walking along Pike Place Market, you’ll find notable farm-fresh produce stalls, fishmongers, and specialty food shops. Make sure you visit this must-see in the morning before it becomes very busy later in the afternoon!

Seattle Art Museum

It’s time to get artsy! Since 1933, the Seattle Art Museum (SAM) has been a hub for world-class visual art in the Pacific Northwest. SAM is located in the heart of downtown Seattle, and the museum is filled with light galleries and various collections from regions all over the world that bridge cultures and centuries. SAM is especially noted for its extraordinary Native American galleries and impressive collection of Australian Aboriginal art. The museum places a heavy emphasis on acknowledging that the building is located on Indigenous land of the Coast Salish people, and SAM strives to honor its ongoing connection to the past, present, and future of these communities.

Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument

As the name implies, Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument is a monument to Mount St. Helens, an active volcano located in Skamania, Washington. On May 18th, 1980, the volcano erupted with an unprecedented amount of force, blowing down trees 16 miles away and creating 163 decibels of noise. The aftermath of its eruption was visible from space and left a massive crater on the mountain.​​ The area has become a popular tourist destination with many hiking trails, picnic spots, and scenic views that can be enjoyed by car or on foot. Interestingly, you are allowed to climb to the summit of the active volcano even though it is classified as the most active volcano in the continental US.

Woodland Park Zoo

Woodland Park Zoo opened its doors in 1899, making it 123 years old! Located in Seattle, the zoo is nicely situated in a major city. Here you can enjoy viewing a plethora of animals, such as tigers, porcupines, rhinos, and penguins. Woodland Park strives to save animals and their habitats through conservation leadership and engaging experiences. The zoo is known for its wide array of creatures spanning the globe, and it has even received more than 65 awards across multiple categories for its exhibits. In total, Woodland Park is home to over 300 animal species and spans 92 acres.

Lake Chelan

Given that Washington State is known as the ‘Evergreen State’, it makes sense for it to offer a wide variety of nature. This is precisely the case with Lake Chelan. The lake boasts an impressive size of 50.5 miles and, before 1927, it was actually considered the largest natural lake in Washington State. The Museum of Flight

With over 175 aircraft, the Museum of Flight is one of Washington’s top attractions. Located near Seattle, the museum offers an interesting alternative to the city’s main attractions. Amazingly, the museum possesses some of the world’s rarest aircraft. These include the first Boeing 727, 737, the first Air Force One (the president’s airplane), the Boeing 247D, and the only Concorde on the West Coast. Apart from aircraft, the museum also boasts a collection of photos from millions of aircraft aviation historical moments. 

San Juan Islands

The San Juan Islands are an archipelago located in Washington State. Known for their breathtaking natural beauty, the islands are characterized as having Pacific Northwest landscapes and wildlife. Here you can find sea lions, bald eagles (America’s national animal), and humpback whales. Apart from that, American icons such as Bill Gates, Steve Miller, and Tom Skerritt all own property in the area. Since the islands are so close to the sea, the seafood is amazing and you can have your appetite’s desire freshly caught!

Las Vegas

In Las Vegas you can find about 195,000 slot machines, so it’s no surprise that this city is considered as the gambling capital of the world. Vegas attracts more than 43 million visitors annually, who collectively spend more than $16 billion in the various casinos in the city. Besides all the casinos, the city is also known for its entertainment sector, many great artists can be found in the city every year. For sure, in this city you have enough to do and see to enjoy yourself for days. A real must visit during your visit to Nevada.

Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe is located on the border between the states California and Nevada and is the largest mountain lake in America, located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The area is an important tourist attraction for water sports as well as winter sports. So you can easily enjoy yourself here all year round. Rent a boat in the spring or summer and have fun on the water. In the winter months you have perfect views of Lake Tahoe from the various slopes over here. So, plenty to do in this area for everyone.

Valley of Fire State Park

The Valley of Fire is Nevada’s oldest and largest state park in the States. The park gets its name from the fact that on a sunny day it looks like the rocks in this park are on fire. You don’t have to be a hiker to explore the nature and the view here, the beautiful rocks are also clearly visible from the car. If you still want to take a walk, the Elephant Rock is highly recommended. From the parking space in the east of the park it is only a short walk to this special rock, which in our opinion is definitely worth to take a look.

Red Rock Canyon National Conversation Area

Located just outside Las Vegas, Red Rock Canyon is the perfect place to get away from the rush of this city. In fact, the park is so close to the city that you can see the mountain peaks from the Las Vegas strip. Red Rock Canyon is a protected nature reserve in America. It is characterized by the large red rock formations, created by sandstones that were pushed up by thrust. The park is easy to explore by car, on foot and even by bicycle. Highly recommended for a relaxing break.

Reno

Reno is located in northwestern Nevada and is also known as ”The Biggest Little City in the World”. The city has about 220,000 inhabitants and is therefore approximately equal to Eindhoven in terms of population, so it is indeed relatively small for an American city. The city is full of all kinds of casinos, theaters and houses the Nevada Museum of Modern Art, partly because of these activities the city attracts millions of tourists every year.

Black Rock Desert

Unlike many other deserts, the Black Rock Desert does not only consist of large surfaces full of sand. This area consists lava beds, narrow canyons, desert playa and all kinds of mountainous areas. In addition, volcanic activity regularly takes place in this are, resulting in a special landscape full of lava beds. But the landscape is not the only thing that makes this area special; record attempts have been made here several times since the end of the last century, including rockets tests. And if you want to see more of this desert, you can also visit Burning Man.

Burning Man

Burning Man is a festival in the Black Rock Desert, Nevada. The festival gets its name from the symbolic burning of a large wooden statue, the man, which always takes place on the penultimate night of Burning Man, the Saturday before Labor Day. The event is mainly focused on art, self-expression and self-reliance. The festival attracts tens of thousands of visitors from all over the world every year. In addition, all kinds of music performances are organized during the festival and all kinds of other gatherings between visitors.

Virginia City

Virginia City is located in the Reno metropolitan area and is a census-designated city. The city had its most prosperity in the second half of the nineteenth century, with the opening of numerous mines and the discovery of the first large silver deposits. Today, the city has greatly diminished in size, remaining less than a thousand inhabitants in the city. Because the city was already declared a National Historic Landmark in 1961, the city can still be visited in a old town atmosphere nowadays. With a trip to Virginia City it really feels like you are going back in time.

Hoover Dam

The Hoover Dam is an immense concrete dam built on the border between the states of Arizona and Nevada. At a height of 221.4 meters, it is the second highest dam in the United States. As far as we are concerned, this dam should certainly not be missed during your trip through Nevada and we are the only one in this; the dam attracts some 8 to 10 million people every year (apart from normal traffic). So this must be a special place.

High roller

At 167.6 meters, the High Roller on the Strip in Las Vegas is the tallest Ferris wheel in America and the second highest Ferris wheel in the world. The High Roller opened in 2014 and has a capacity to take 1120 visitors at a time. A ride takes half an hour and gives you a great view of the entire city. If you want to see a lot of the city in a short time or just have a beautiful view, this is a real must visit. We would definitely go, do you dare?

As a student-athlete you of course spend a lot of time on sports and studying. But there is also plenty of time to explore the country.

So today we show you the highlights of the state of Michigan. The state has many beautiful nature reserves, true metropolises and many beautiful places that you must see.

Tahquamenon Falls State Park

This park is located at the eastern part of the state. Most of it consists undeveloped woodland. The river and waterfalls of the Tahquamenon are in the center of the park. The Tahquamenon Falls are also one of the largest waterfalls in East America. Very impressive if you ask us. In the rest of the park you will find many more waterfalls that you can view from land or even from the water. In addition, the park is also ideal for beautiful walks. A real must visit if you want to relax in America.

Frankenmuth

Frankenmuth is known for its Bavarian-style architecture. A historical museum is located in the middle of the city, this museum sheds light on the German history of the city. In this typical German town in the middle of Michigan, there is always a cold beer ready for you. Moreover, there are plenty of activities to do in this village all year round. ”Little Bavaria”, as the village is also called, is therefore worth visiting all year round. But if you have the opportunity, a visit during the Christmas period is highly recommended. Visit Frankenmuth and immerse yourself in this magical world.

Mackinac Island

Mackinac Island is located in Lake Huron, between several peninsulas. Mackinac Island State Parc covers most of the island. The park is largely forested, but the famous Arch Rock formation is also an important part of this park. This natural stone arch was created at the end of the Glaciation and is about 45 meters above the sea. You also have a beautiful view of the sea and all the greenery from the various vantage points in the park.

In addition to the large National Park, there are also countless beautiful, special and historic houses in typical American style on the island. As far as we are concerned, this island is really worth a visit.

Isle Royale National Park

Isle Royale National Park is located on an island in the middle of a lake on the border between America and Canada. A fun fact: you can only reach the park by water. Once you are on the island, a rugged landscape is in front of you, where you can enjoy the nature for hours, if not days. There are also all different kinds of animals on the island, including moose and wolves. There are plenty of hiking trails on the island where you can explore the area. Prefer to view the area from the water? Rent a canoe or kayak, hours of fun are guaranteed.

Detroit

Detroit is the largest city in the state of Michigan and is best known for its link with the car industry, so it’s not for nothing that the city is nicknamed ”Motor City”. From 1950 onwards, due to automation in industry, the city continued to decline and vacancy increased rapidly. Nowadays, the city is growing again and is especially popular with the younger generation. In the video below you can take a look on a virtual tour through the city of Detroit and you can clearly see the link with the industry.

Fun fact: The well-known American rapper Eminem grew up in Detroit.

Detroit Institute of Arts

Detroit Institute of Arts is a museum located in downtown Detroit. The museum houses one of the largest and most important art collections in the United States. It is not surprising that the museum is considered by many to be one of the best in the country. The museum’s art collections come from all over the world. In addition to the impressive art, the museum is also known for the building itself, which is highly regarded by architects. The building is also part of the Cultural Center Historic District, Detroit. In our opinion, this museum is definitely worth a visit if you are in the city.

The Henry Ford

The Henry Ford is a historical museum complex located just outside of Detroit. The museum features some important historical items: John F. Kennedy’s limousine, Abraham Lincoln’s chair (both former US Presidents), Thomas Edison’s lab, the Rosa Parks bus, and much more. The museum attracts more than 1.7 million people annually, making it one of the largest museum complex in the United States. What makes the location extra special is that it has been a National Historic Monument since 1981. Visit The Henry Ford and go back in time.

Pictured rocks national lakeshore

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is located in the far north of the state of Michigan. It is known for its dramatic and multicolored cliffs along the water’s edge. Unusual sandstone formations define the headlands in this landscape of the park. It is recommended to explore this area by boat, this way you can also see the remains of various shipwrecks, which are scattered along the coastline around the 19th-century lighthouse of Au Sable Point.

Michigan Stadium

Michigan Stadium is the home of the American football team of the University of Michigan. With a current capacity of 107,601(!) spectators, the stadium is the largest stadium in America and the third largest stadium in the world. It is not surprising that this stadium is nicknamed ”The Big House”. Several European clubs have played here in the past, we understand why. What a huge stadium! In our opinion a real must visit if you are in Michigan or simply want to experience the real American (college) football feeling.

Middleton Place

Middleton Place is considered a historic landmark in America, the former plantation has one of the oldest and largest landscaped gardens in the United States, covering an area of ​​​​more than 110 hectares. During the Colonial period, the complex served as residence of the wealthy owners of the Middleton family. Nowadays as a tourist you can go back in time by visiting Middleton Place. A very impressive piece of American history.

Charleston’s Historic District

The Historic District is located in the middle of the city of Charleston. The district consists a large number of buildings build according to 18th and 19th century architecture. In 1931, the district was named as the first historic protected district in the United States. Nearly 30 years later, in 1960, the area was even declared a National Historic Landmark. In our opinion, this neighborhood is definitely worth to visit when you are in Charleston.

Caesars Head State Park

Caesars Head State Park is one of the best hiking spots in South Carolina. The park is about 30 km2 and has a large number of hiking trails. One of the park’s best-known trails leads you to Raven Cliff Falls, which can be crossed by a large suspension bridge. In addition to the waterfalls, you can also enjoy a beautiful landscape of mountains and lakes in the park. For a small entry fee you can enter the park and enjoy the beautiful nature.

Myrtle Beach

Even if you want to relax, South Carolina is the place to be. The state has a lot of beautiful beaches, one of the most striking beaches is Myrtle beach. With an average annual temperature of 22 degrees Celsius, it is always wonderful weather to relax on the beach. After a long day at the beach, you can easily walk onto the boulevard and go into the Ferris wheel for example. From the ferris wheel you have a beautiful view over the city and the sea.

Broadway at the Beach

Myrtle Beach has more to offer than just the beach, a little further on is the boulevard, better known as ”Broadway at the Beach”. There is plenty things to do, you can shop for hours, there are plenty of restaurants, countless attractions for young and old and much more. There is even an entire theatre at the boulevard. In addition, many people like the cozy appearance of the boulevard. In our opinion, a real must visit if you want something different than just a normal beachday.

Falls Park on the Reedy

Falls Park on the Reedy is a park in downtown Greenville. The park is best known for its striking suspension bridge around the waterfall, supported on only one side by cables. An extra beautiful view of the falls guaranteed. The Upsate Shakespeare Festival is also hosted in the park every year in summer. But above all, this park in the middle of the city is a wonderful place to relax and escape from the bustle of the city.

Fort Sumter

The American Civil War began with an attack on Fort Sumter in 1861. The fort is located in the Harbor of Charleston. The fort was badly damaged during the war and was never fully restored. Since the mid-twentieth century, the fortress has been part of a National Monument and is open to the public. If you want to learn more about the history of America, this is the place to visit.

Darlington Raceway

NASCAR is live and kicking in South Carolina, Darlington Raceway is a track built especially for NASCAR races. The track has an egg-shaped layout and was opened in 1950. Since then the track has hosted a large number of racing competitions. A NASCAR race, called Southern 500, is organized every year. The race often takes place at the beginning of September. Due to the presence of a museum about the history of the circuit, this place is worth visiting all year round.

Columbia

We conclude with the capital of South Carolina, Columbia. The city derived its name of explorer Christopher Columbus. The state’s largest university is also located in this city, the University of South Carolina. In addition to the many shopping streets, there are also plenty of parks in the city. Highly recommended to visit is the State House of South Carolina. The government of the state is located in this classical, immense building. Like Fort Sumter, the State House has also been named as a National Landmark.

Big Bend National Park

Big Bend National Park is located in Southwest Texas, close to the Mexican border. The Rio Grande River flows through the park. The park is therefore excellent to discover from the water, both by kayak and boat, guided tours are offered for everyone. In the National Park you can find plenty of desert areas, canyons and rock formations, but there are also plenty of animals such as bears and many different types of birds. In addition, with geological funds, remains of overseas fossils and dinosaurs have been found.

San Antonio River Walk

The San Antonio River Walk is a waterfront urban park in San Antonio and is the heart of the city. The footpath is almost 25 kilometers long and leads you to all the main sights. In addition, numerous restaurants and local shops are also located along the river. So the San Antonio River Walk is the perfect way to discover the city. Don’t feel like walking? You can also explore the city on a boat tour from the water and still see all of the San Antonio River Walk this way.

Terlingua

Terlingua is a ”ghost town” close to the Big Bend National Park. At the end of the nineteenth century, the city became extremely popular among miners and the city experienced its heyday. At the end of the Second World War, the mine went bankrupt and all the miners left the city. In the meantime, the city is completely deserted, and you can take a walk along the ruins or take a look at the old prison.

Fun fact: Every year in November, the chili cookout takes place here, a festive event and competition to see who makes the best chili.

Cadillac Ranch

The Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo is a public work of art, made up of ten Cadillacs standing straight up and buried with their noses in the sand. The artwork was designed in the 1970s by a group of artists from San Francisco. Although the site has been the site of several protests in the past, and is now officially on private land, it is still very popular among tourists and locals. Now it is mainly known for the graffiti sprayed works of art.

The USS Lexington

USS Lexington is an aircraft carrier built during World War II for the United States Navy. The aircraft carrier was used for various naval battles, including at Pearl Harbor. Nicknamed ”The Blue Ghost”, the ship has been moored in the port of Corpus Christi since 1992, where it has also served as a museum ever since. For this, the ship was restored and, for example, several cannons were placed back. In addition, the ship was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2003. That must be an impressive museum.

Space center Houston

The Space Center in Houston is a science museum and official visitor center of the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston. The museum is immense (23,000 m2) and exhibits several relevant space explorations. Including the Apollo 17, which was used during a manned moon landing during the last Apollo mission. But there are also plenty of exhibitions and performances that teach you more about space travel and NASA. Plan a visit to the Space Center and imagine yourself in space for a while.

The Alamo

The Alamo is an important part of the history of the Texas War of Independence. The Alamo was a Catholic mission building in San Antonio and was the center of the Texas independence movement. The fact that it is such an important building proves the fact that there are many legends about it. A building that has been very important in Texas history. There are many places here that will take you back to the days of the Texas War of Independence, a must visit if you ask us.

Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is the largest livestock exhibit and rodeo in the world. The event was first organized in 1931, and has been held since 2003 at NRG Stadium, where American football games are normally played. The event attracts more than a million visitors annually, lasts 20 days and has since become a true symbol of the city of Houston. Several well-known artists have also been present in the past, including Elvis Presley, Beyoncé and John Legend performed here during the show.

Dallas

Dallas was a hugely popular series at the end of the last century about a family living on a ranch made rich by the oil industry. Fan of the series? You can now visit the popular ranch yourself.

The city of Dallas is now best known as a metropolis, and the third largest city in Texas. The city mainly attracts many tourists because of its historic streets, cultural background and special and beautiful architecture. If you’re in Dallas, be sure to pay a visit to Dealy Plaza. This is where former US President John F. Kennedy was killed when he was shot at in an open limousine.

Guadalupe Mountains National Park

Guadalupe Mountains is a national park in western Texas. The park is the pinnacle of Texas; Guadalupe Peak at 2,667 meters high. The park has a beautiful, versatile nature, with dense forests, but also extensive rocky areas. A must visit for a nice walk, because the park has no less than 130 kilometers of hiking trails. In addition, the park is also known for the world’s most extensive fossil reef from the Permian era. Definitely worth a closer look.
