From July 23rd to 30th, the World Swimming Championships are taking place in Fukuoka, Japan. Here, the best swimmers in the world will compete for world titles in distances ranging from 50 to 1500 meters in the pool. Of course, college swimmers cannot be absent from this event. Below is an overview of some well-known college swimmers who are participating in this World Championship.

It is indeed striking that Team USA consists almost entirely of college swimmers. This is not surprising, as the United States is a powerhouse in swimming, with a fantastic college system that brings out the best in swimmers. In addition to the U.S., several other countries also have multiple college swimmers from Division I and Division II participating in the championship

The Dutch team includes three (former) college swimmers: Firstly, our very own Nyls Korstanje (NC State), but also Kira Toussaint (Tennessee) and Caspar Corbeau (Texas) have been involved in college swimming.

Nyls Korstanje – Netherlands

Our own “Slamstox athlete” Nyls has once again qualified for the World Championships in the 100-meter butterfly. The strong-swimming Nyls has just completed his studies at NC State in North Carolina and is now ready to showcase his abilities at the World Championships. Last year, Nyls achieved impressive semifinal placements in the 50-meter butterfly (10th) and 100-meter butterfly (9th) at the World Championships in Budapest.

Our other Team NL college swimmers, Caspar Corbeau and Kira Toussaint, also achieved impressive final placements at the same tournament last year. Caspar swam to a fantastic 6th place in the 200-meter breaststroke, while Kira secured a 6th place in the 100-meter backstroke and an 8th place in the 50-meter backstroke. Both swimmers are once again representing the Netherlands at this year’s championships.

Leon Marchand – France

Undoubtedly, the best college swimmer at the moment is Leon Marchand from France. Marchand added NCAA titles in the 200-meter breaststroke, 200-meter individual medley, and 400-meter individual medley to his list of achievements last season. In addition, he already won the 200-meter and 400-meter individual medley at the World Championships in Budapest last summer. As if that wasn’t enough, he also earned a silver medal in the 200-meter butterfly at that tournament. Marchand, representing Arizona State University, is once again participating in the World Championships this year, not only representing France but also showcasing the talent from college swimming in America.

Alongside the numerous Division I swimmers representing various countries at the upcoming World Championships in Japan, there are also swimmers from Division II competing in the tournament this summer. Here are a few of them:

• Lamar Taylor – Bahama’s & Henderson State University.
• Steven Aimable – Senegal & Nova Southeastern University.
• Daniel Garcia – Colombia & University of Findlay
