Sports: Women’s Soccer
Entry semester: Fall 2026

This is Maud van der Weij, a 17-year-old from the Netherlands who lives on the small island of Ameland. Her passion for soccer began at a young age, as she first stepped onto the field at the age of five.

Initially, Maud wanted to dance and practice gymnastics, just like her mother, but since there were no clubs for these sports on Ameland, her father encouraged her to try soccer. “You’ll love it,” he said, and soon Maud discovered her passion for the sport.

The first seven years of her soccer career, Maud played with the boys, but then she decided to switch to a girls’ team. In addition to soccer, Maud has also practiced other sports, such as tennis and athletics, and she has participated in triathlons.

What makes Maud special as a person is her ambition, curiosity, and empathy. She is very social and loves meeting new people. As an athlete, Maud stands out due to her tremendous drive and infectious enthusiasm. Her speed and sharp insights make her a valuable asset to any team.

Maud is very curious about the American women’s soccer culture. The idea of being constantly involved in her sport while simultaneously earning a valuable degree greatly appeals to her. She sees it as a unique opportunity to combine her passion for soccer with her ambition to develop further, both as an athlete and as a person.
