The college tennis showcase through the eyes of Bodi van Galen

Soon, the Slamstox College Tennis Showcase is back on the schedule! It’s a great opportunity to get acquainted with college tennis, work on your UTR, and showcase yourself to American coaches. Several coaches will be present to scout new tennis talent on the courts of Genneper Parken.

In short, what is the Tennis Showcase?

July 20, 21, and 22 are completely dedicated to college tennis. We’ll be training, playing matches (both singles and doubles), and you’ll learn all about college tennis through presentations, Q&A sessions, and, of course, speed dates with American coaches. Our aftermovie from last year will give you a sneak peek!

To give you an even better idea of the showcase, we asked Bodi to share his experiences. Bodi van Galen is 18 years old, participated in the showcase last year, found his ideal university there, and has been playing for the men’s tennis team at Austin Peay State University since January. APSU competes in the Atlantic Sun Conference, Division 1.

How do you look back on the college tennis showcase?

Last year, I attended the showcase and I look back on those three days with a good feeling. I learned a lot, both about myself and about America. There was also a lot of focus on the experiences of players and coaches, which I found very helpful and educational.

During the showcase, I also stayed at a hotel nearby, which made everything around it very well-organized. The food at the tennis park was great, and there was a shuttle service between the hotel and the tennis courts, among other things.

What role did the college tennis showcase play in your American process?

The showcase played a big role in my journey to America because it was where I made initial contact with my current coach. It was a very pleasant and enjoyable interaction because you get to talk to the coach in person right away. You don’t have to talk to someone over the phone or email, but you get to know immediately what the coach is really like and what they prioritize and want to see.

The contact was initiated after one of my matches, which he was also watching. After that, we talked and got to know each other better. For example, I told him about my goals in tennis, both short-term and long-term. Ultimately, we talked for about half an hour, maybe even longer, and he was happy with the contact, as he was able to get to know me better.

I kept in touch with him afterwards and eventually chose to attend Austin Peay because it is a good university in a very strong conference, which allows us to play many high-level matches. But also because I immediately liked the coach, he is a very nice person and we had an instant connection.

What tips do you have for other tennis players?

Definitely talk to a coach, even before you start playing. It’s important to show interest in a coach before they come to watch you. Coaches also appreciate it when you take the initiative, so just approach a coach if you want to know something. This shows that you are enthusiastic and would like to be part of a team.
