A scholarship is a financial contribution that helps students pay for all or part of their studies. In the United States, scholarships are very common and are awarded to students with strong academic or athletic achievements. A scholarship can be worth thousands of dollars a year and makes studying in America feasible for many international students.
How does a scholarship work?
American universities have a budget with which they award scholarships to talented students. With these they try to bind the best candidates to their institution – both academically and athletically. Unlike in the Netherlands, where scholarships are less common, scholarships in America are an important part of the admissions process.
The amount of the scholarship depends on your profile: the better your grades or sports performance, the greater the chance of a high scholarship. In some cases, up to 100% of the costs (tuition, housing, meals) are reimbursed.
Two common types of scholarships
There are roughly two types of scholarships in America:
- Athletic scholarship: These are issued by athletic coaches to students who excel in their sport. Coaches decide how to distribute their budgets to team members.
- Academic scholarship: These are awarded based on school grades, GPA and admission test scores (such as SAT, ACT or TOEFL). The university admissions committee decides who is eligible.
In some cases, you can even combine both types, reducing your costs even further.
