Basketball in the United States

More than 2,000 universities in America offer scholarships for boys and girls who would like to combine basketball and studying in America.

College basketball in America is the ideal way to get better at your sport, get stronger both physically and mentally, and make friends with other student-athletes from all over the world! The time to develop yourself and have the time of your life.

All of this serves as a good start and preparation for your future career: whether on or off the basketball court! For many players, College basketball is also a perfect route to later turning pro in the NBA.

Did you know. Big names like Michael Jordan, LeBron James and Kobe Bryant also once started playing college basketball before making their mark in the NBA?

College basketball is different from the “normal” basketball you are used to in the Netherlands: both in organization and in atmosphere. You don’t play for a club team, but for the team of a university. In America, the leagues and the (financial) stakes in college basketball are so big that an enormous amount of money is spent on it. For virtually every American youth basketball player, the goal is to play for a good college basketball team.

On average, a team consists of 20 boys or girls, and you train together every day. With your team you compete against other universities in the competition (conference). The ultimate goal? To win the conference! Then the team qualifies for the national tournament, in which the best 64 teams in America compete! The NCAA national basketball tournament is also known as “March Madness.”

A typical game in college basketball is played in 2 halves of 20 minutes. So this is different from the rules in the NBA!

The biggest difference of all is the atmosphere during games in and around the stadiums. Teammates and fans make a lot of noise, encourage each other and often shout encouraging texts at each other. So don’t be surprised if during a game thousands of students are cheering, the games are on TV and mega amounts of sponsorship money are raised during these kinds of games: the energy level is very high!

Studying at an American university can cost as much as $65,000 a year! An amount that is unrealistic for almost all students. That is why almost all universities offer the opportunity to obtain both an athletic and academic scholarship, so too for college basketball players.

Slamstox helps you find a college and scholarship so that your college basketball experience becomes affordable. Some student-athletes receive a full scholarship, which allows you to play sports and study in America for four years free of charge. Other student-athletes receive partial scholarships, in which case a (large) portion of the tuition costs are covered. Here you can find more information about scholarships and costs in America.

Do you have questions about scholarships or want to know what is realistic for you? If so, please contact us via the introductory form without obligation and we will be happy to help you.

Because basketball is played at many different levels, there are also many opportunities for players of every skill level.

The college basketball system is divided into eight different divisions. Some divisions feature more than 300 teams, and there is also a lot of level difference within the divisions. Therefore, the level of basketball varies from top NBA prospects in Division 1 to club and regional players in lower divisions.

Through this link you can find more information about the different divisions in America.
