Over the years, various sports have experienced significant growth at American universities. Moreover, new sports are continually being introduced, which are also organized at the collegiate level. The growth of these sports can be seen in the increasing number of participants, but also in the higher viewership numbers for these sports. Below, we take a look at five of the fastest-growing sports in the NCAA. Perhaps there’s something for you!

Lacrosse

Perhaps this sport rings a bell for you. Lacrosse is increasingly being offered during physical education classes. This trend is also evident at universities in America. Particularly, women’s lacrosse has experienced strong growth. One of the main reasons for this growth is the increased media attention lavished upon lacrosse. As a result, more people are being introduced to the sport and becoming familiar with the adrenaline and skill involved. Additionally, youth programs within lacrosse have been expanded and made more accessible, leading to an increasing number of young people participating in the sport.

Did you know that lacrosse is quickly becoming an Olympic sport? The IOC, in consultation with the United States Olympic Committee, has decided to reserve a spot for lacrosse at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. This will likely only further increase the sport’s popularity! And if you have Olympic ambitions, this might be the perfect time to get involved. Netherlands has set a goal to qualify for the 2028 Games!

Beachvolleyball

Another sport rapidly gaining popularity at universities within the NCAA is beach volleyball. The rise of this sport at universities is remarkable. This is because beach volleyball has traditionally been more associated with recreational activity rather than organized competition at the university level. According to many, a significant reason for the rapid growth of this sport at the college level is the dynamic nature of beach volleyball. This makes it attractive to both spectators and TV viewers. As a result, the sport receives more exposure, leading to the emergence of new beach volleyball players and more fans.

Did you know that this summer the European Beach Volleyball Championship is being organized by the Netherlands? From August 13th to 18th, the best beach volleyball players in Europe will come to Apeldoorn, Arnhem, and The Hague to compete for the European title. It’s a great opportunity to get acquainted with the sport! Who knows, maybe you’ll be playing volleyball in the American sand in a few years!

E-sports

A non-traditional sport that has seen tremendous growth in recent years takes place on a screen. Although Esports isn’t always considered a sport, many universities have formed competitive gaming teams, participating in Esports tournaments and competitions. The rapid growth of Esports is mainly due to the increasing number of boys and girls playing video games. This has attracted a new audience of gamers and enthusiasts.

Did you know that League of Legends is the most popular game in college Esports? In this game, you compete in a multiplayer online battle arena against other teams with the goal of destroying each other’s base. The competitive league for this game is called the CLoLCS, which stands for College League of Legends Championship Series. Other major games in college Esports include Overwatch, Rocket League, Super Smash Bros, and Fortnite. So, there’s something for everyone. If gaming is your hobby, who knows, you might soon be trading your bedroom for the prestigious stage of American universities.

Women’s soccer

In the Netherlands, soccer is the number one sport. In America, it’s a bit different. Sports like basketball and American football are much bigger there. However, soccer, especially women’s soccer, continues to grow in popularity. The success of the United States women’s national soccer team, along with increased media attention and participation at the youth level, is ensuring that the sport continues to thrive at the university level as well.

Our own Slamstox women’s soccer manager, Daisy de Boer, has amassed considerable experience in women’s soccer, both in the Netherlands and America. Daisy has played for the Dutch national teams under 15 and 16 years old, as well as for prominent clubs like FC Twente and SC Heerenveen. Having lived, played, and coached in America for seven years, Daisy has built an extensive network in the college women’s soccer world.

Men’s volleyball

Finally, men’s volleyball has also experienced tremendous growth within the NCAA. This is because the popularity of volleyball as a sport itself has increased at all levels worldwide. As a result, universities are investing more financial resources into volleyball. Better training facilities are being developed, and more opportunities are emerging for athletes to play volleyball at a high level. This makes it increasingly appealing for boys to consider attending a university in America.

Did you know that there are already several Slamstox volleyball players in America right now, and that number is set to more than triple next school year? This is not only due to the fact that college volleyball is growing, but also because of the increase in opportunities in the Netherlands. And let’s be honest, who wouldn’t want to explore their options for America alongside Ron Zwerver, Olympic champion?
