Academic tests

To be admitted to an American university, in addition to your GPA (grade point average), the “Admissions Office” also looks at your scores on admission tests: the SAT or ACT, the TOEFL, IELTS or the DuoLingo Test. The scores of these tests not only determine whether you will be admitted, but can also affect the amount of your academic scholarship. You do not have to take all the tests to be admitted to an American university; some schools, for example, require only the SAT and the TOEFL.

Slamstox helps you pick the right tests, register for them, and prepare and study. With specific practice materials, you can prepare optimally to get the highest possible score. This will not only increase your chances of admission, but also of receiving a higher scholarship!

The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) is a standardized college admission test for universities in America. The test consists of three parts: math, reading comprehension (English) and English writing (essay). For the math and English sections, you can get a score of 800 points per section, so 1600 total. The essay component is not required at most schools, and therefore is not always taken.

The SAT test is designed for students entering America after high school. If you have already attended college or university in your home country, it is usually not necessary to take the SAT.

Slamstox gives you learning tips and materials, helps you register and schedule the test, and sends your scores to the U.S. coaches! Slamstox can also prepare you for the SAT these days through personal SAT training sessions, curious how we do that? Get in touch with us!

The American College Testing (ACT), like the SAT, is a standardized college admission test for universities in America. Typically, students choose to take either the SAT or the ACT.

The ACT test consists of four sections: English, Math, Reading and Science. For each section, you will receive a separate score between 1 and 36 points. Your final score is the average of the scores you received on the 4 sections. The higher your score, the greater your chances of admission and academic scholarships!

The DuoLingo English Test is a newer, modern way to test your command of the English language. You can take the test from home; this is not always possible with the TOEFL and IELTS tests, for example.

You can score between 0 and 160 points for the DuoLingo test, with 160 being the highest score.

The DuoLingo test has grown rapidly in popularity since the emergence of the Corona virus. The big advantage of the test is that you can take it at home, the scores are quickly available, and in addition, the test is also cheaper. Not all universities yet use the DuoLingo test to determine whether international students have a good enough command of the English language but more and more are doing so.

Would you like to know if the DuoLingo Test is sufficient for your university? Feel free to ask us!

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is required at almost all universities for students whose native language is not English.

This test tests general knowledge of the English language, as it is important for universities to be sure you have a minimum level of English proficiency. The test consists of the components of reading, writing, listening and speaking. For each section you can score 30 points, which can add up to a total score of up to 120 points. The test can be taken at several locations in the Netherlands. In some cases it is also possible to take the TOEFL test online.

Slamstox helps you with preparation and other TOEFL-related issues such as registration, scheduling and sending your scores to coaches and universities. We also have practice materials available for our student-athletes to practice for the test.

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is an alternative to the TOEFL.

This test also tests you purely on your command of the English language. Each university maintains a minimum score for admission. The different parts are listening, speaking, reading and writing. For the overall result, you get a score between 0 and 9. The higher your score, the better!

What are the admission tests?

The most common admission tests for American universities are:

  • SAT or ACT (general academic tests)
  • TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo English Test (language tests)

Should I always take the SAT or ACT?

The SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test) is the most popular choice among international students. Many American students also take this test. Yet it is not always required:

  • However, for first-year students (right out of high school), the SAT or ACT is often required.
  • For transfer students (student-athletes who have already started college or university), the SAT is usually not required.

A growing number of universities also operate “test-optional,” which means you don’t have to turn in the SAT, but you are allowed to take it to boost your profile – for example, for extra chances at a scholarship in America.

Is a language test mandatory?

Yes, if you are not a native English speaker, almost all universities require a language test. You can choose from:

  • TOEFL (in demand and well known)
  • IELTS (widely recognized in Europe and Asia)
  • Duolingo English Test (cheap, fast and completely online)

What additional admission requirements apply?

Your admission to an American university often includes:

  • Letters of Recommendation
Teachers, mentors or coaches can play an important role in your admission. A powerful letter of recommendation shows who you are as a student and person.
  • Motivation letter (personal statement)
In it you explain why you want to study in the US, why you choose a particular university and what your goals are. A good cover letter really makes a difference.
  • Extra-curricular activities
Consider volunteering, side jobs, internships, sports or music. American universities are looking for students with ambition, initiative and involvement outside the classroom.
  • Admissions Interview
Some universities invite students to an (online) interview. During this interview, they want to better understand who you are and what you come to contribute to campus.

What does this mean for you as an international student?
