    Academic tests

    Why are admission tests important?

    What are the admission tests?

    • The SAT and ACT are general admission tests that measure your math, reading and language skills.
    • The TOEFL, IELTS and Duolingo Test measure your level of English if you are not a native speaker.
Not all admission tests are mandatory for everyone. Some universities only ask for the SAT and a language test, while other schools also accept the ACT or Duolingo. Slamstox will help you determine which test combination is required for you.

Preparing admission tests: here’s how Slamstox does it

Proper preparation for your admission tests is essential if you want to study in America. Slamstox offers you:

    • Advice on which admission tests you need
    • Guidance on test enrollment and scheduling
    • Help with sending scores to coaches and universities

With targeted training, you will achieve the highest possible score and increase your chances of admission and a great scholarship.

    Need help?

The SAT test consists of two main sections: Math and Language (English), each with a maximum score of 800 points. So your total score can reach 1,600 points. There is also an optional essay section, but this is no longer required at most universities.

Who is the SAT intended for?

The SAT test is especially relevant for students who want to go to America right after high school. Have you already attended college or university in the Netherlands? Then you usually do not need to take the SAT – in that case you fall under the so-called “transfer student” status.

When and where can you take the SAT?

    Preparing for the SAT test

A good score on the SAT test is crucial if you want to study in America – and a higher score can even ensure a better chance of admission as well as an academic scholarship. Slamstox helps you do just that:

    • Personal coaching and training sessions
    • Support with enrollment and test planning
    • Sending your scores to coaches and universities

    SAT or ACT?

Students usually choose either the SAT or the ACT, depending on what they feel most comfortable with. The content of the ACT often fits students with science or analytical backgrounds a little better because the test includes a science section.

When do you take the ACT test?

Want to know more about the ACT?

The Duolingo English Test can be taken entirely online – just from home. That makes this test ideal if you don’t have access to a physical testing center or need your scores quickly. The test is affordable, flexible and you usually receive the results within 48 hours. This makes the Duolingo English Test an attractive option for students who want to study in America.

    How does it work?

The Duolingo English Test assesses you on reading, listening, writing and speaking – just like other language tests. You can score between 10 and 160 points, with 160 being the highest score. The test takes about 1 hour to complete.

Please note that not all American universities yet accept the Duolingo English Test as valid proof of language proficiency. But this number is growing rapidly – especially since the corona pandemic, when many students were unable to physically test.

Is the Duolingo English Test sufficient for your university?

Whether you can use the Duolingo English Test for admission to your studies in America depends on the university. Some schools still require a TOEFL or IELTS score. Fortunately, Slamstox is happy to help you figure out which test is required for you.

TOEFL test studying in America: this is what you need to know

The TOEFL test tests your English language skills. This is important for universities because they want to make sure that you have sufficient command of academic English to successfully study in America.

The test consists of four parts: reading, listening, speaking and writing. Each section accounts for up to 30 points, so the total score on the TOEFL test can reach 120 points. Universities usually set a minimum score for each program.

Where and how do you take the TOEFL test?

The TOEFL test can be taken flexibly. In the Netherlands, you can go to several test locations. In addition, in many cases it is also possible to take the test online via the TOEFL iBT Home Edition – convenient if you don’t want to travel.

    • Motivation letter (personal statement)
In it you explain why you want to study in the US, why you choose a particular university and what your goals are. A good cover letter really makes a difference.
