Can I go to America after university education?

Can I go to America after higher professional education (HBO)?

To play college sports at an American university you have 4 years of eligibility and therefore you can receive a scholarship for 4 years. You can spread this 4 years over a period of 5 years after finishing high school and these start from the moment you start your studies. There are also rules for the number of gap years that you can take after graduating high school. If you already started a bachelor’s degree, you can go to the US as a transfer student. You transfer all of your earned credits and continue your study in the US. After completing your higher professional education (HBO diploma), many students are eligible for a master’s degree in America. What is GPA?

Why is GPA important?

Can I do my Master studies in the USA?

You can certainly also follow a master’s degree in the US. You are entitled to play for a period of four years. If you have obtained a bachelor’s degree in the Netherlands, you can therefore combine sports and a (master) study for another four years at an American university.

When you start a Bachelor’s degree as a first-year student and have combined sports and study for four years, you are no longer allowed to work for a university team.

However, you can still do a master’s, for example by being an assistant coach of a team, so that many of your study costs are covered. Then you are no longer a student athlete and you will not receive an athletic scholarship.

What's my diploma worth in the Netherlands?

In the USA, no difference is made between HBO and WO, so there can be large differences in level per university. In most cases, athletes with an American bachelor’s degree can transfer directly to a Dutch (or other international) master.

Sometimes it happens that our athletes have to do a pre-master of six months or a year before they can start a university master in the Netherlands (just like a Dutch HBO student).

What are Junior and Community Colleges?

Junior and Community colleges are 2-year college programs in the United States where you can earn an ‘Associate Degree’.
