About Benjamin
Benjamin Bok is no average student-athlete. Before he made his move to America, he was already known as one of the best chess players in the world. At a young age, he represented the Netherlands at both European and World Championships, and in 2014 he received the prestigious title of Grandmaster. Yet he chose to push his boundaries even further – literally and figuratively.
The next step? Studying and combining chess at a top university in the US. He found that at Saint Louis University: the place where talent, ambition and one of the best chess teams in the world come together.
The road to America
After graduating from Sint Joris College in Eindhoven, Benjamin knew one thing for sure: he wanted to continue growing. Not only in chess, but also academically. He wanted to continue playing his sport at the highest level, gain international experience and at the same time study at a university that really suited his ambitions.
That combination did not prove obvious – after all, few American universities have strong chess programs. But where others saw obstacles, Benjamin saw opportunities. Thanks to his drive, sharp choices and the right network, he ended up at Saint Louis University. And that turned out to be exactly the right match.

The path
Benjamin was offered a full scholarship, including extra budget to participate in international tournaments. Everything fell into place: he was part of a top team, grew academically and built his professional career.
And as if that wasn’t impressive enough – during his journey toward America, Benjamin faced a personal setback: a brain tumor. He underwent surgery, recovered strongly and came back stronger than ever. Not much later, he and his team became National Champions in the US. A feat that additionally also earned him the “Most Recognizable Performance Award” at the 2021 Slamstox Student-Athlete Festival.
Stronger together with Slamstox
What made the journey with Benjamin unique was his mindset. He thought big, always persevered and had a crystal clear focus. Slamstox supported him in finding the right university, helped with the paperwork and arranged all administrative matters. But most of all, it was Benjamin himself who made this success possible – with his dedication, his story and his character.
With his experience at Saint Louis University, Benjamin has laid a solid foundation – for a successful career, inside and outside of chess.
