Guus Koevermans began his Slamstox journey not only as a student-athlete, but now also as a collegiate player on the team. The former top player in his age group made the switch to American college tennis and joined the team at the University of San Diego – a dream location to combine his sports and study ambitions.
A flying start in America
After completing his havo in the Netherlands, Guus wanted to combine his passion for tennis with an academic career. His goal: to play at the highest level as well as secure an athletic scholarship. The transition to America went smoothly, despite the challenges that came his way. For example, time constraints played a role and being eligible to play in his first year brought extra paperwork.
The Role of Slamstox
When Slamstox was in its infancy, Guus received guidance from Pedro Mol, founder of Slamstox. Pedro helped him with all the administrative issues surrounding his admission and playing eligibility. The personal approach and quick communication were indispensable.

Guus found in San Diego exactly what he was looking for: a place where he could fulfill both his athletic and academic goals. The combination of a strong tennis education and living in a dream location made his time as a student-athlete unforgettable.
Back at Slamstox
After his adventure in America, Guus is now active himself within Slamstox, where he supports Pedro in the tennis department. With his experience, he helps new student-athletes make the right choices for their future.
“Nice to still be involved in college tennis after all these years and still be able to advise boys and girls on which college is best for them.” – Guus Koevermans
