Pien Elsen made the move from top field hockey in the Netherlands to college field hockey in the United States. The talented defender and midfielder played for HC Rotterdam MO18-1, the team that became national champions in 2023. Before that, she played for Leonidas MO18-1, where she was active at Super A level. Pien spent her entire youth playing hockey at the highest level, both on the field and in the hall. Her list of successes includes two national titles and an indoor championship. She also showed her technical class by becoming club champion shoot-outs and finishing as a finalist at the regional championship.
A versatile player with discipline and insight
On the field, Pien excels through her speed, technique and game insight. She is very strong defensively and offensively and stands out because of her clever positioning. As a midfielder and defender, she has great running ability and is constantly developing herself. She trains extra on her running condition and technical skills and is known as an extremely disciplined and motivated team player.
Academic talent with an international goal
In addition to her athletic accomplishments, Pien is also very strong academically. She earned her VWO degree in June 2023 with a GPA of 3.84. It quickly became clear that Drexel University in Philadelphia was the perfect match. The combination of a strong academic program and an ambitious field hockey team immediately appealed to her. Her goal was to gain international experience and continue to play at a high level while pursuing a quality education. That mission succeeded: Pien left for America in the summer of 2023 with a full scholarship in her pocket.
