The 1.91-meter tall middle blocker Marit Mensinga is a familiar presence on the volleyball court. With her impressive length, strong blocking skills and hard service, she was a valuable player for Limes Volleyball Club. In her last season she combined playing in the highest U18 team and the women’s team. She has now traded her Dutch team for a new challenge in America: studying and playing volleyball at Palm Beach State College.
Qualities on the field
As a middle blocker, Marit is a real asset to any team. Her perfect timing, strong block and tactical insight make her a nightmare for opponents at the net. Her service is an extra weapon: hard and tight, with which she regularly scores direct points or puts a lot of pressure on the opponent.
Combining study and sports
After completing her HAVO degree in the Netherlands, Marit knew she wanted to combine her passion for sports and studies. Initially, the plan was not to leave for America until 2025, but due to serious interest from universities, she decided to embark on the adventure a year earlier. Thanks to her open attitude and strong work ethic, she quickly managed to adapt to life in America. Although the team and coach took some getting used to at first, Marit soon felt at home and is now fully participating at varsity level.
The Role of Slamstox
In the process of finding a suitable university, Slamstox played an important role. Together with Marit and her parents we looked for the best match between academic level, sports program and personal wishes. In a short period of time, quick action was taken, universities were approached, papers were arranged and conversations were held with coaches. Not only was the athletic part considered, but also Marit’s academic potential and well-being. Her cheerful character, enthusiasm and confidence in the process made the process extra special.
A promising future
For Marit, the move to America has proven to be a perfect combination of sport and academia. She continues to develop, plays many matches and gains international experience that will benefit her for years to come. With her perseverance, team spirit and talent, a bright future lies ahead of her, on and off the field. Next step: a transfer to Hastings College, in the NAIA.
