From Spaarnestad to Emmanuel University
Thijs van der Wal started playing volleyball at the age of 10 at VC Spaarnestad. During his time there, he played with men’s second team and trained with men’s first team. A true “boy of the club,” he was known for his tremendous motivation and dedication to take his game to the next level. Thijs was always improving his skills and was determined to become the best player he could be.

His ultimate goal? To find a top university where he could grow as an athlete and learn from his teammates. Thijs not only wanted to further develop his athletic skills, but also to continue his personal and academic growth.

The journey with Slamstox
The process of going to America was not without its challenges. Thijs was already in contact with several coaches, mainly from NAIA universities, but both he and the Slamstox team felt there was more to be gained. Over several months, Ron and Frederique had intensive contact with Thijs and the coaches, and eventually this resulted in the perfect match: Emmanuel University.

Slamstox helped Thijs by providing him with the right tools and knowledge about the American system, volleyball programs, and all the peripheral issues, such as paperwork and visa. Even though the process took a little longer than expected, Thijs remained motivated and positive, and his parents had faith in Slamstox. This determination and confidence in Slamstox eventually led to the opportunity Thijs had earned.

The result
Thijs has found an excellent spot at Emmanuel University, with an impressive athletic scholarship and an additional academic scholarship thanks to his high GPA combined with his SAT score. On his new team, Thijs is already considered one of the biggest talents.

The transition to the American system was a bit challenging in the beginning. The training sessions are more intense than Thijs was used to, especially since he just came back from an injury. But despite the challenges, he is enjoying himself in the U.S., has made new friends and is super excited about the upcoming season.

What was Slamstox’s most valuable guidance?
“Slamstox’s network, knowledge about volleyball and the enthusiasm with which they were always ready to answer questions made all the difference for me. They really helped me make the right choices and made the process easier,” Thijs said.

What was especially perceived as valuable was the network and expertise that Slamstox brought. The enthusiasm, presence in the room and always accessible support made it easier for Thijs and his parents to keep faith in the process, even when it took a little longer.

Quote from mother Dineke van der Wal:

“We are extremely satisfied with Slamstox’s help. They helped Thijs very well in his search for the right university and guided us through the process. Thanks to their network and knowledge, Thijs now has the opportunity to make his dream come true in the United States.”
