A new adventure on the other side of the ocean: for Nina Schiks, this dream became a reality. The talented defender, who did her soccer training at Borussia Mönchengladbach, made the move to Mississippi Valley State University to continue her academic and athletic career. This is her success story.
A promising soccer career
Born in 2005, Nina grew up with an undeniable passion for soccer. A right-legged defender, she can play as both a central defender and right back. Her impressive game insight, physical strength and defensive qualities made her a regular in Borussia Mönchengladbach’s youth training program. Since 2020, she has trained and played in a professional environment.
On the field, Nina excels because of her calmness on the ball and her ability to build the game from the back. Her passing, positioning and strong defensive duels make her a crucial role on her team. Her experience with the KNVB regional teams and playing at a high level gave her the tools to take the next big step in her career: college soccer in the United States.

Transferring to Mississippi Valley State University
The process of finding the right university was not easy. Nina had several options, but thanks to Slamstox’s guidance, she found the perfect match at Mississippi Valley State University. Here she not only got the chance to play at a high level, but she was able to combine her studies and sport in the best possible way.
Upon arrival in the U.S., Nina had to get used to the new system, the intense training and the hot climate. “Training is really tough because it’s so hot and muggy here, but you get used to it,” she told me. Despite the adjustment period, she was immediately well taken care of by her team and coaches, so she soon felt at home.
Success and new experiences
Nina immediately played many minutes and grew into a valuable player on her team. In addition, she not only proved to be a talent on the soccer field, but also got a unique opportunity to be part of the tennis team in the spring. Without any tennis experience, she stepped into this adventure and although the team does not win much, they have a tremendous amount of fun together. This shows how open and flexible Nina is in her new environment.
With her ambitious attitude and perseverance, Nina has all the tools to make her college soccer career a success. She continues to develop and enjoy the unique experience of studying and playing sports in America.
