About Maarten
Before Maarten Schouten made his move to America, he played as a goalkeeper at the highest youth level in the Netherlands and was part of Top Oss in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie, the second highest level in Dutch soccer. He played for TOP Oss as the third goalkeeper in the first team, having previously gone through the youth training of NEC Nijmegen. With this professional background, he had already laid a strong foundation for a career as a student-athlete in the United States.

The road to America
For Maarten, it was clear from the beginning: he wanted to combine soccer and studies, gain international experience and continue to develop academically. The ultimate dream was to eventually play at the NCAA Division 1 level. An athletic scholarship was essential to make this step possible.
During the process, several challenges came his way. Due to temporary ambiguity about his school background and the necessary admission requirements, the pathway was complex. Also, the entry level of college soccer was different than expected. As a result, patience was a key factor: although coaches were enthusiastic, the NCAA process needed to be clarified first.
Since a direct move to NCAA Division 1 was not possible at that time, the search was on for a good intermediate step that would still take him toward that goal. It was found at Bethel University. Maarten found the perfect combination of sports and studies there. He is now laying a strong foundation here to still make the transition to the highest level in college soccer in the future.
“I like it a lot! Now very busy with all kinds of things, like school, trainings and many small peripheral things that need to be done.”

Stronger together with Slamstox
Slamstox supported Maarten every step of the way. Through personal contact, targeted guidance and experience in the NAIA system, the switch was made quickly. The choice for Bethel University turned out to be a hit: a strong sports environment where Maarten can get lots of minutes and continue to develop – both as a goalkeeper and as a student.
With his professional sports background, perseverance and ambitious goals, Maarten shows what is possible with the right guidance and attitude. In our opinion, his story is a real example for other athletes who want to get the maximum out of their sports and academic career.
