Isa van Puffelen knew at a young age that sports would play an important role in her life. She began athletics at age seven and trained in multiple disciplines, including the all-around, hurdles and middle distance. Soon Isa noticed that she needed a more balanced and focused training environment. She found that at age fifteen at AV Daventria, the club where she continued to develop as an athlete and her passion for athletics took further shape.
Isa van Puffelen is a strong example of perseverance and resilience. In the Netherlands, she had to deal with a long-term injury period of one and a half years. However, thanks to a good rehabilitation program, Isa came back stronger than ever and managed to improve all her personal records. After completing her VWO, she had a clear goal in mind: to combine studying and sports at the highest level. That ambition eventually brought her to the United States.
Athletics in the United States
Isa began her American adventure at the University at Buffalo. The transition to the American college system took some getting used to at first, both athletically and in daily life. The pace, training intensity and life on campus required adjustment. Meanwhile, Isa is completely accustomed and feels at home within the team and at the university.
What makes Isa’s story special is her road back after injury. Her strong comeback in the Netherlands gave her the confidence that she could also compete at a high level in America. She takes that mentality into her training and competing, continuing to develop as an athlete and student.

In addition to her athletic growth, Isa has also made great strides academically. The combination of studies and athletics fits well with her ambitions. For Isa, the American system offers structure, challenge and opportunities to get the best out of herself, both on and off the track.
The guidance of Slamstox
During the process, Slamstox played a supportive role, particularly in terms of personal contact, advice on scholarships and universities, and administrative guidance. One of the biggest challenges in the process was getting her high school’s grade sheets signed correctly and on time, where additional support was very valuable.
Taking some getting used to, but mostly enjoying
When Isa was back in Holland last summer, she came to watch the NK athletics. She was extremely enthusiastic about her experiences in America and everything she had built up there. One thing she still had to get used to: the food in America. Otherwise, Isa looks back on her adventure so far with great pleasure and feels completely at home.
Isa van Puffelen shows that setbacks, such as a long injury, do not have to be an end station. With perseverance, confidence and the right choices, she has found a place where she can grow both athletically and academically. Her story inspires other athletes to also pursue their dreams.
