Saar Prins is a real go-getter. Growing up at a smaller club like Baarn, she always had the ambition to get more out of her field hockey career than the club could offer. That motivation brought her via Slamstox to the United States, where she has been a member of Lynchburg University’s varsity team since the summer of 2023. By now she feels completely at home, on and off the field.
From Baarn to Virginia
Although Saar came from a smaller club, she more than made up for that with her dedication, discipline and enthusiasm. She saw America as the opportunity to grow as both a player and a person. Her goal? To combine sport and study in a new, international environment.
The transition to college field field hockey in the U.S. required some adjustment, especially physically. In the beginning Saar played a little less, but by working hard on her fitness and strength, she has fought herself back to become a fixture on the team. She is now an integral part of the selection and contributes significantly to Lynchburg’s performance every week.

The Role of Slamstox
The journey to America began under considerable time pressure, which made the process challenging. Providing the correct medical documentation, in particular, required some extra time and effort, but thanks to the guidance of Slamstox, this was ultimately resolved smoothly.
Slamstox helped Saar find a suitable university where she could fulfill both her athletic and academic goals. In NCAA Division III athletic scholarships are not allowed, but Saar managed to secure a nice academic scholarship through her academic achievements. Even after placement, the contact between Slamstox and Saar remained warm, with room for questions and support when needed.
More than field hockey
In addition to her field hockey achievements, Saar is developing strongly academically. She completed her HAVO before moving to the U.S., and now uses her time in America to get better not only as an athlete, but also as a student. Moreover, she is building friendships and experiences that will last a lifetime.
And the sporting adventure in the US isn’t limited to Saar alone: her sister, Pien Prins, is following her example and left for the University of Connecticut in Fall 2025. A wonderful family story!
Moving to America has brought Saar an awful lot: participation in a competitive team, an academic challenge, personal growth as well as valuable international experience.
