Baarn field hockey star Femke van Marle had one clear goal in mind after finishing high school: to study and play field hockey in America. From her club MHC De Mezen she made the step abroad, where she played for Mount Olive University since Fall 2023. A choice that brought her much not only athletically, but also personally.
Femke combined her passion for field hockey with the desire to gain international experience and secure a sports scholarship. After graduating from high school, she decided to go full steam ahead with this adventure. She wanted to challenge herself, both academically and athletically, and learn from a new environment and culture.
The trajectory toward America
The process was not always without tension. For example, in the beginning there was some uncertainty about scholarships and contact with coaches was sometimes difficult. Nevertheless, Femke remained positive and involved. She worked hard, asked the right questions and kept good contact with the Slamstox team. That proactive attitude and her strong communication skills helped her make quick moves and find the right match.

Once in America, it took some getting used to at first: a new environment, different culture and an intensive training schedule. But Femke adapted quickly and found her niche within the varsity team. She got many playing minutes, achieved sporting successes and thoroughly enjoyed the unique combination of study and top sport.
A period of growth
During her time in America, Femke developed not only as a field hockey player, but also as a person. Her perseverance and positive attitude ensured that she got everything out of her adventure. After two wonderful years in the United States she decided to return to the Netherlands, richer in experience, friendships and unforgettable memories.
