Isabelle Aalders is a talented Dutch high jumper who made the move to American Cumberland University in the fall of 2024. Her route began at a young age and has had highlights, setbacks and an impressive comeback.
An early passion for high jump
Isabelle began athletics when she was seven years old at AV de Liemers in Zevenaar. Soon her passion for high jump became apparent. At fifteen, she captured second place at the NK for youth, which earned her the honor of representing the Netherlands during the c-interland against Germany. Her talent led to training at top sports venue Papendal, after which she transferred to athletics club Ciko ’66 in Arnhem for further development.

Setbacks and recovery
Despite her talent, Isabelle suffered from shin splints that hampered her performance. When she moved to Amsterdam for her studies in 2019, athletics temporarily disappeared into the background. But the sport did not let her go. After successful rehabilitation, she regained her enjoyment of high jump and joined a specialized high jump group at AV1923. With renewed energy and improved physical abilities, Isabelle managed to increase her performance considerably. In 2023 she jumped no less than 1.75 meters, her personal record, and finished fifth at the NK indoor, as well as becoming champion at the national student indoor.
Study and sport in balance
In addition to her athletic ambitions, Isabelle is also academically strong. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science and then took courses in physical therapy. In the U.S., she wanted to develop further, both athletically and academically. Her interests are in health, physical therapy, nutrition and even ocean studies. At Cumberland University, she continues her studies with several minors in the field of sports and health.
The move to America
The road to America had some obstacles. Because Isabelle had already studied a lot in the Netherlands, her playing eligibility had to be carefully arranged. Thanks to the intensive guidance of Slamstox this could still be completed in time and Isabelle could start her American adventure. The beginning took some getting used to and some formalities had to be arranged, but in the end everything went smoothly. She now feels completely at home within the team and at the university.
An experience never to be forgotten
The journey with Isabelle stayed with us mainly because of her determination, positive attitude and the confidence she and her family had throughout the process. Despite time constraints and administrative challenges, she remained motivated and enthusiastic. And with success: Isabelle not only gathered valuable international experience, but also built personal growth, made friends for life and made the most of her time in the United States.
