Jochem Ostendorp knew early on that he wanted more out of his soccer career than just playing in the Netherlands. After his time with De Graafschap O21, where he was active at a high level, the desire arose to combine his sport with a study and to gain international experience. That ambition eventually brought him to the United States, where he now studies and plays soccer at Northeast Community College.
Ambition and a clear quest
With an MBO background, Jochem faced an important challenge: finding an academic direction and a university that really suited him. His goals were clear but multifaceted: play at the highest possible level, combine studies and sports, find out which academic direction suited him, gain international experience and, above all, regain the pleasure in soccer.

Challenges in the process
Thejourney to America was not without obstacles. There was little contact with coaches, the academic requirements differed from university to university, and the entry level of the sport also proved challenging. Together with Slamstox, the best route for Jochem in the long run was therefore critically examined.
Ultimately, a conscious decision was made to attend junior college. This step gave Jochem the opportunity to get a lot of playing minutes, develop further and get ready for a possible transfer to a big four-year university. Slamstox guided this process intensively with personal contact, administrative support, advice on scholarships and universities and negotiations with coaches. The cooperation with both Jochem and his parents was experienced as particularly pleasant.

Playing soccer in the United States
Jochem started his adventure at Northeast Community College. The transition to the American system took some getting used to in the beginning, but now he is fully adjusted. He makes a lot of playing minutes, achieves athletic successes and feels stronger and stronger within the team.
In addition to his athletic development, Jochem is also making great strides academically. He received an athletic scholarship, allowing him to fully focus on his studies and soccer. The combination of intensive training, playing games and studying has helped him find structure and continue to grow as a student-athlete.
A promising end result
Jochem Ostendorp’s trajectory shows the importance of a well thought-out route and good guidance. By choosing a junior college, he has now found an environment in which he can excel athletically and grow academically, with the prospect of taking the next step to a major university.
